Rozanna Patane, Chair of York’s Energy Steering Committee, joined me as I signed the Letter of Commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The Board of Selectmen voted on July 29th to commit, via this program, to reduce then eliminate generation of greenhouse gasses in York, and to help ensure broad access to clean, renewable energy for all citizens. In practical terms, we will now begin to view our work, our spending, and our policies through the lens of these new sustainability goals. This will trigger noticeable changes throughout our organization.
There are a variety of statistics out there (they’re on the web so they must be true, right?), but this worldwide coalition of local governments represents about 10% of the population on the planet Earth. In terms of trying to reduce global warming, we’re in with a big and growing crowd, and this is a really big deal!
