York's GIS data On-line Help.

The tools and buttons may not be as intuitive as one would hope but with some practice we are sure that this will become a valuable tool to many people. Below one can see a brief descripton of the tools and legends so that one can figure out what each button does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to hit the Print Map Button and not the one on my browser?

We have tried to make the printing process as easy as possible but there are some issues with the way the software interacts with internet browsers. Unfortunately the software that we use does not "play well" with browser software printing commands so we had to come up with a different a different way of printing. We are trying to come up with a better, easier way so please keep your eyes open for changes.

Can I get a copy of your GIS data?

Please send a list including the type of data you are interested in to Brett Horr at bhorr@yorkmaine.org

What happened to the measure and clear buttons?

The size of the new buttons did not allow us to keep the measure button and clear measure button on the tool bar. Those options are now under the "QUICK TOOL" menu. They still work the same, but are just in a different location.

Why does everything move so slowly?

There are a couple of different reasons, one can depend on what type of internet connection because if one uses a dial-up service the connection is very slow. Another reason is that we might be experiencing some network difficulties in Town Hall, also in order for you to get your response the message has a couple of different routes that it has to take so that can slow down responses too. We have tried to make the process as quick as possible from our end but we sometimes have unexpected issues too.

Why is part of my print job cut off?

The settings for your browser need to be reset to make sure that the print job will fit. The margin settings need to be 0.25 inches and the print orientation needs to be "Landscape". If you are unsure as to how to change these settings, below are 2 links for more help on changing those settings in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

How come I don't see all of the buttons on my screen?

That is because the software works best when your screen resolution is set to 1024 X 768. You can reset your screen resolution so that you can see all of the buttons by doing the following. Go to "Start Button > Settings > Control Panel > Display" and once the new window opens, select the "Settings" tab. From there one will see a little slider bar that is titled "Screen Area". Move the slider either up or down until the readout shows 1024 X 768. Windows will pull up a message stating "Windows will now apply your new desktop settings. This will take a couple of seconds, during which time your screen will flicker. If your new settings are not applied correctly, your original desktop settings will be automatically restored in 15 minutes." Go ahead and click "OK" and your screen will change. If done correctly one will see a new pop-up window that states "Your desktop has been reconfigured. Do you want to keep these settings?". Click "Yes" and everything on your desktop will be a little smaller but should be working just fine. This will allow for all of the tools to appear. If one does not want to use this desktop setting then click "No" and the desktop settings will revert back to their original screen resolution of 800 X 600.

How come when I hit print map nothing happens?

When you hit the print map button it actually opens up a new browser window with your map in it. Try looking at the toolbar on your screen and see if a new window has opened up. That is where your map should be.

Also, a lot new anti-virus software block "pop-up" windows. This is how we deliver the maps to be printed. One of the solutions for this issue is to hold the "CRTL" key when you hit Make Map and the Map Output Window will appear. One can also add http:\\gis.yorkmaine.org in the settings for your pop-up blocker as a website to allow pop-ups. This will prevent the need from ever using the CTRL button again, on this website.

I checked the box to turn on a new layer but it did not appear, why?

After checking the box or boxes one still has to hit the "Refresh Map" button and then the changes will take place.
